Healthcare Facility

To decommission and remove in totality a live communications room and rack to allow for a new piece of medical equipment. To install a new rack in a new location positioned in the PABX room some 30 meters from the original location.

The Challenge

The challenge for this project was carrying out the work with minimal to no disruption to the hospital itself.

‍

The challenge is that the communications room and rack are the sole providers of communications to level one BMI section of the hospital. This area includes equipment such as angiography, CT, patient treatment and recovery areas, along with workstations, wireless access points, and office spaces that are critical to the operations in this area.

‍

As these units and facilities are regularly used by the emergency department there are no convenient or suitable times for these areas to be off-line or without communications.

‍

The QA Electrical Solution

To supply and install a new 170-point communication system complete with new specified data rack and equipment while leaving the existing redundant data rack and field cabling live and undisturbed until the new infrastructure was in place, commissioned and certified.

‍

All this while following strict infection prevention and control measures that need to be adhered to at all times with clinical deep cleans required after any and all works take place in these areas.

‍

Significant planning was needed in conjunction with infection control, client end user, and high-level hospital staff to arrange night works in and around live areas to supply all new cabling and infrastructure to all 170+ existing data points throughout the area. This required continual communication with clinical cleaning staff, having them on site and on hand throughout the nights to deep clean areas immediately after works were completed.

With its experienced and knowledgeable staff and management QA Electrical was able to manage and facilitate significant planning needed in an extremely short space of time.

This type situation requires consultation from and in conjunction with stakeholders such as, the infection prevention control department, biomedical, unit managers, environmental services management, building services, communication engineers and high-level hospital staff to arrange night works in and around live areas.

‍

To be able to supply all new cabling and infrastructure for 170+ existing data points throughout the area in a timely and cost-effective manner required continual communication and organisation from all involved with the project. This along with a safety-first focused work group is the reason QA Electrical was able to handle a project of this size and complexity with customer satisfaction.

Our Results

QA Electrical was able to transition the live and functioning area from the redundant communication system to the newly installed one, with no disruption to the day-to-day workings of the hospital and while adhering to infection control measures.
